Dan Steven’s Matthew Crawley and Jessica Brown Findlay’s Lady Sybil almost met their death together in a tragic car accident, Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes has revealed.
An unforgettable Christmas Day episode in 2013 saw the death of Matthew as he raced home in his new motor car moments after meeting his newborn son for the first time. Lady Sybil died earlier in the year in childbirth.

But now Julian has said that, if things had worked out, there would have been a double catastrophe in series three.
Julian said: “It was tough really because Jessica had said she was going to leave right from the beginning. She said, ‘I’m doing three years, then I’m leaving.’ So that was all worked out.
“But Dan only decided to leave when we were about to start filming, already written five episodes and cast them. I couldn’t do more funerals, more memorials.
