One-Time Beatles Drummer Andy White Dies.

Scottish drummer Andy White, who stepped in to play on some of The Beatles' early tracks, has died in the US.

White died aged 85, following a stroke at his New Jersey home, according to his family.

He was chosen ahead of Ringo Starr in September 1962 to play the drums on the single versions of Love Me Do and P.S. I Love You.

Glasgow-born White was paid the princely sum of £5 for his three hours of recording time and he received no royalties in the years afterwards.

"You could tell it was something different and very special, but I didn't know just how special it would become," he told the Daily Record in 2012.

Because of his early work with the band, he was sometimes ranked among the so-called "Fifth Beatles", along with people such as Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best.

In 1964, Mr White played the drums for Lulu's cover of Shout and Tom Jones' famous 1965 single It's Not Unusual, two of many famous singers he worked with.
