NEW YORK (AP) — Singer Jazzmeia Horn has won the Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Competition.
Horn won the competition finals Sunday night at Los Angeles' Dolby Theatre after performing the standards "Moanin'" and "Detour Ahead." She'll receive a $25,000 scholarship and recording contract with the Concord Music Group.
Originally from Dallas, the 23-year-old Horn also won the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition two years ago.
The evening also featured a gala concert honoring Quincy Jones, who was presented the Monk Institute's humanitarian award by pianist Herbie Hancock.
An all-star lineup, including singers Ledisi and Patti Austin, saxophonist Jimmy Heath, and guitarist George Benson, performed musical highlights of Jones' career.
The concert closed with the entire ensemble performing "We Are the World" as a tribute to the victims of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
