Madonna halted a concert in Stockholm to share her feelings about the Paris attacks as France began three days of mourning.
The American star told the audience it had been "very hard" to perform on stage on Saturday night "and not forget about what happened" during the atrocities in which 129 people died.
At one point in her six-minute speech she was handed a tissue to wipe away tears.
"I need to take this moment to acknowledge the tragedy," she said to applause.
"The tragic killings, assassinations and the senseless ending of precious life that occurred last night in Paris."
