Simon Cowell has told how he remembers where he was when he heard of the death of George Michael, who he described as “one of the best songwriters ever”.

The Britain’s Got Talent judge selected George’s hit One More Try as one of his favourite songs when appearing on BBC Radio 2 presenter Ken Bruce’s show.

The X Factor founder told Ken: “You always remember where you were when you heard the news and I was on holiday.

“I was so upset because I’ve met George a couple of times.

“I found him to be really kind, genuine. He was an amazing person and he was one of the best songwriters ever.”

He said it was a “toss-up” between the number one from album Faith and Praying for Time but selected the former because it “just typifies” George, who died on Christmas Day at the age of 53.
