Fox has released the first trailer for potential Oscar contender Le Mans '66, starring Christian Bale and Matt Damon.

Based on a true story, Le Mans '66 – known as Ford v Ferrari in the US – follows American car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) who teamed up with British-born driver Ken Miles (Bale) to take on Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in France in 1966.

The two worked together to battle corporate interference, the laws of physics and their own personal demands to build a revolutionary race car to triumph over the dominating cars of Enzo Ferrari.

Le Mans '66 is directed by Logan's James Mangold, who was drawn to the movie because he wanted to go back to a time when "we were a little less cautious".

"Now, we've become so corporate, liability-protected, computer simulated and risk averse it's hard to imagine the same kind of discovery is even possible. The eccentric characters who pioneered racing, much like our astronauts and test pilots, put their lives on the line every day," he continued.
